Major Political Shift: Pro-Wike Grassroots Coordinators Resign En Masse, Pledge Allegiance to Governor Fubara

12 Local Government Coordinators from the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political pressure group associated with former Governor Nyesom Wike, have resigned from their positions to pledge support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The coordinators, representing various local government areas, including Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt City, Opobo/Nkoro, and others, made their decision known during a delegation visit led by former Obio/Akpor Local Government Area coordinator, Collins Onunwo. They emphasized their commitment to protecting, defending, and promoting the interests of Rivers State and its people.

Onunwo clarified the group’s departure from GDI, stating, “We want to be with Rivers people. Rivers’ interest is paramount.” He highlighted the historical significance of GDI, founded by Nyesom Wike, in bringing him to power in 2015. However, the coordinators now see their allegiance with Governor Fubara, citing the importance of safeguarding the votes that elected him in a credible and fair election.

Former Public Relations Officer of GDI ACF, Christian Abu, explained that the coordinators resigned to “get Simplified,” indicating their alignment with the strategies and movements that historically brought electoral successes to the state. Abu affirmed their unwavering commitment to Governor Fubara’s victory and mandate, emphasizing the group’s dedication to protecting the freely given mandate under the PDP platform.

The meeting, held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, featured prominent figures, including the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Chijioke Ihunwo, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power, Solomon Abel-Eke. The coordinators’ decision marks a significant shift in political alliances and underscores the evolving landscape in Rivers State politics.
