Macron Calls Emergency Meeting of European Leaders to Discuss Trump

 

 

French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly called an urgent meeting of European leaders to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting is expected to take place on Monday, according to Politico, which cited two European Union officials.

 

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski hinted at the gathering during the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. “I’m very glad that President Macron has called our leaders to Paris,” Sikorski said, emphasizing that discussions would focus on the implications of Trump’s actions “in a very serious fashion.”

 

Sikorski has previously been vocal about U.S. politics, comparing President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance to the decline of ancient Rome. He has also acknowledged Trump’s stance on NATO, agreeing that member nations should increase their defense spending.

 

Macron has maintained a measured approach to Trump since his reelection in November. Following the election, the French leader posted on X (formerly Twitter), congratulating Trump and expressing a willingness to work together again. “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump. Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity,” Macron wrote.

 

In December, Macron hosted Trump in Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral, calling it “an honor.”
