LP Reps Caucus Lambasts Party Spokesperson for Alleging Poor Representation

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has confronted Obiora Ifoh, the national publicity secretary of the party, over his recent statement accusing lawmakers of failing to adequately represent their constituents.

Last week, the LP caucus advocated for a postponement of the party’s national convention, citing the need for thorough planning and inclusion in decision-making processes regarding the event’s date and venue.

In response, Ifoh cautioned against lawmakers making premature public statements on internal party matters and asserted that they had fallen short in their duties to the electorate.

However, Edward Dibiana, media aide to Afam Ogene, leader of the LP caucus in the House of Representatives, contested Ifoh’s remarks, emphasizing that the party spokesperson had failed to address the concerns raised by the lawmakers regarding the convention.

Dibiana challenged Ifoh to substantiate his claim that the caucus had been duly informed about the convention with official documentation, highlighting a disparity between informal communication and formal notification.

He criticized Ifoh’s dismissal of the caucus’s call for proper planning and wider consultations as “a mischief taken too far,” labeling it as insensitive and disappointing.

Dibiana underscored the contrasting responsibilities of Ogene, who must balance the interests of constituents, colleagues, and stakeholders, with Ifoh, whose allegiance lies solely with his employers.

He questioned the credibility of the LP’s convention preparations, noting the absence of a planning committee, named delegates, or transparency regarding candidacy announcements, while emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency within the party.

The confrontation highlights growing tensions within the LP, as internal disagreements over party procedures and representation come to the fore ahead of the scheduled national convention.
