Lieutenant Yarima Survives Suspected Assassination Attempt in Abuja

Lieutenant A.M. Yarima of the Nigerian Navy survived a suspected assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja, according to an account in an exclusive report from Vanguard, after being trailed by unidentified men in two unmarked Hilux vans. Military sources said the officer first noticed the vehicles at the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway before they followed him toward Gado Nasco Way around 6:30 p.m. He reportedly carried out a tactical maneuver that allowed him to shake off the pursuers.

Security officials confirmed that the incident is under investigation and described the matter as sensitive, adding that further information is being withheld to avoid jeopardising ongoing efforts.

The development follows a high-profile confrontation last week between Yarima and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during an operation at a disputed land site in Gaduwa District. Footage of the altercation circulated widely, drawing public scrutiny and leading to a directive from the Presidency to halt the demolition exercise at the centre of the dispute.

The clash sparked nationwide criticism from retired military personnel who condemned the minister’s comments toward the officer and dismissed suggestions that Yarima should face disciplinary action. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, speaking for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, warned that former service members were prepared to occupy the minister’s office and residence should any sanctions be imposed. He argued that uniformed personnel serve the nation and should not be demeaned by public officials.

Reassurance later came from the Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, who stated that no officer carrying out lawful duties would be punished. Speaking at a briefing ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, he emphasized the ministry’s commitment to protecting personnel who discharge their responsibilities appropriately.

Veterans had earlier indicated their readiness to mobilise nationwide protests if Yarima faced disciplinary measures.
