Legal Luminaries Decry Attacks on Judiciary’s Integrity

In a collective stand against what they perceive as a “reckless war against the judiciary,” prominent Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) have voiced their concerns over sweeping allegations of fraud and corruption targeting judges, particularly in politically sensitive cases.

Notable figures such as Chief Mike Ahamba, Professor Awa Kalu, Kunle Adegoke, and Dr. Olukayode Ajulo have cautioned against tarnishing the reputation of the nation’s judiciary, emphasizing the potential consequences of such actions on the country and its citizens.

Expressing their dissatisfaction with colleagues who have fueled the negative narrative, the senior lawyers argue that condemning the entire judiciary based on the actions of a few judges undermines the majority of upright judges diligently carrying out their duties.

They stress that while certain judges may have issued controversial decisions in recent political cases, labeling the entire judiciary as a failed institution is unjust and poses a risk of destabilizing the nation.

The lawyers contend that critiquing individual judgments through academic journals and constructive analysis is a more responsible approach than participating in a public denigration of the judiciary. They advocate for a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in legal decisions and urge their colleagues to contribute to the development of legal jurisprudence through scholarly channels rather than sensationalism in the media.

This unified stance by Senior Advocates seeks to address the challenges faced by the judiciary and calls for a balanced and informed discussion on issues affecting the legal system, cautioning against actions that could harm the institution’s credibility and public perception.
