Lawyers Challenge Police Caution on ‘No Gree For Anybody’ Slogan, Assert Right to Expression
In a recent statement, the Nigeria Police warned against the use of the popular slogan ‘No Gree For Anybody,’ claiming it could incite crisis. However, legal experts, including human rights activist Femi Falana, have strongly contested this position.
Falana asserted that the Police lack the authority to criminalize such expressions, emphasizing that ‘I no gree for anybody’ poses no threat to law and order. He urged the Police to specify any legal basis for restricting ancient expressions.
Dr. Monday Ubani, former 2nd Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, echoed these sentiments, cautioning that while the Police aim to maintain peace, it should not infringe on citizens’ right to express themselves. He emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, ensuring that expressions do not escalate into security threats.
Executive Director of Cadrell Advocacy Centre, Evans Ufeli, criticized the Police warning as unnecessary, highlighting that the slogan is a cultural expression without incitement to violence. Ufeli argued that the Police misunderstood the positive nature of the phrase, which resonates with the aspirations of the youth.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army has adopted a similar slogan, urging citizens to join in saying ‘We no go agree for all terrorists in 2024.’ Major General Edward Buba emphasized that by embracing this expression, Nigerians signal their unity with the military against criminal elements.
In related developments, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently used the catchphrase to inspire the Super Eagles, while lawyers in Lagos protested against police brutality. The legal community called for the Inspector-General of Police to address the high-handedness of officers, citing the unlawful detention of a lawyer, Olumide Shonupe, as an example. Femi Falana led the protest, condemning the disregard for the rule of law and human rights.
