Laolu Akande: Why Wike Should Be Pitiable at This Point

Laolu Akande, a former presidential aide, has described Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as facing a particularly challenging moment in his political career.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Akande, who previously served as special adviser to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said Wike has accumulated numerous political conflicts and rivalries, making his current position precarious. He added that losing his ministerial role could mark the beginning of a decline in Wike’s political influence.

“Wike’s recent statements during his political tours in Rivers State suggest he is realizing his limitations,” Akande said. The minister has reportedly emphasized that he no longer wants to hear about PDP or APC, focusing instead on the Renewed Hope Family, a move Akande interprets as a sign of constrained political reach.

Tensions between Wike and Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara were also highlighted, with Akande pointing to the governor’s recent song as a subtle nod to their ongoing rivalry. He noted that Wike’s preferred successor is presenting stiff opposition, further complicating his efforts to maintain control in the state.

“Democracy is not dictatorship. When leaders fail to carry the people along, it eventually affects their political standing,” Akande remarked. He added, however, that Wike still has the resources and influence to sustain his political presence in Rivers State.

Akande pointed to longstanding political figures, including former Governors Peter Odili and Chibuike Amaechi, as well as former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dr. Patience Jonathan, whose influence Wike has been unable to diminish. According to Akande, Wike currently relies heavily on President Tinubu’s support, leaving him vulnerable should that backing be withdrawn.

“Even the strongest politician cannot manage multiple battles and adversaries all at once,” Akande said. “This is why Wike deserves a measure of pity as he navigates these challenges.”
