Landslide Wipes Out Entire Sudan Village, Only One Survivor Found
A landslide has devastated the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s Central Darfur region, killing an estimated 1,000 people and leaving only one survivor. The disaster struck on Sunday, August 31, in the Marrah Mountains after days of relentless rainfall, according to a statement from the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army.
The group said the entire village was “completely levelled to the ground,” with all residents believed dead. It appealed to the United Nations and international aid organizations for urgent assistance in recovering bodies and providing support to the region.
Footage from local media in the Marrah Mountains showed a vast stretch of land flattened between mountain ranges, where small groups of people were seen searching through the devastation.
This landslide ranks among the deadliest natural disasters in Sudan’s history, underscoring the vulnerability of remote communities in Darfur to extreme weather and natural hazards.
