Lakurawas Terrorists Lure Sokoto Youth with Financial Incentives
A new report from Zagazola Makama, a publication focused on counter-insurgency in the Lake Chad region, reveals that the Lakurawas, a newly-formed terrorist group, is luring youths in Sokoto with financial incentives as part of an aggressive recruitment campaign. Emerging from Niger Republic following a recent coup, the Lakurawas offer as much as N1 million to attract young men into their ranks, according to sources.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) recently listed nine suspected Lakurawas members as wanted. Brigadier General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the group’s infiltration into northern Sokoto and Kebbi states from neighboring Niger and Mali, raising new security concerns for these border regions.
Unlike typical local criminal groups, the Lakurawas combine financial rewards with extremist ideologies akin to those of the Khawarij sect and Boko Haram, aiming to expand their influence. The group has reportedly been challenging local bandits, expelling them, and seizing cattle in areas under their control, though no attacks have been recorded in Nigeria’s North West to date.
