Lagos-Based Prophet Drowns in Valentine’s Day Beach Outing with Church Youth
Lagos State mourns the loss of Prophet Oriyomi Remilekun, a charismatic cleric, who drowned during a Valentine’s Day celebration beach hangout at Avista Beach in the Ajah area.
Prophet Oriyomi led a group of youths from his church parish in Gbagada to the beach on Saturday, February 17, for a festive Valentine’s Day gathering. The evening took a tragic turn when the cleric went missing after the festivities concluded.
A source familiar with the incident revealed that the church members, numbering 16, had first celebrated at a short-term apartment near the resort before moving to Avista Beach. The somber search began when Oriyomi’s absence was noted at the car park around 9 pm. His girlfriend explained that he had given her his phone, entered the beach, and promised to return. Despite their efforts, he couldn’t be found, prompting them to leave.
The following day, Oriyomi’s colleagues returned to the beach for a continued search but were unsuccessful. Eventually, a report was filed with the police. The Avista Beach management confirmed the tragic incident, stating that Oriyomi’s body was discovered on a separate beach in the community on Monday.
An anonymous member of the beach’s management team shared details of the police involvement, mentioning that the missing person report was filed at Ogombo Police Station. The discovery of Oriyomi’s body at Baracuda Beach Resort raised questions about the delay in reporting the disappearance.
Social media has since become a platform for mourning, with friends and acquaintances expressing grief over the untimely demise of the respected prophet. Erinle Abel, a Facebook user, described Oriyomi as a gifted and humble prophet, expressing deep sadness at his sudden departure.
Despite attempts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for a statement, he stated, “I am not aware of the incident.”
