Ladipo, Oyingbo, Other Lagos Markets Reopened After Compliance with Cleanup Measures
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has officially reopened Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede, and Ile-Epo markets. These markets had been temporarily closed due to concerns over their poor sanitary conditions and environmental abuses.
The announcement of the reopening was made by Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, via the organization’s official Facebook page on Monday. Mr. Gbadegesin emphasized that these markets were allowed to resume operations after achieving full compliance with the necessary conditions set forth by LAWMA.
Highlighting the paramount importance of stringent compliance measures in safeguarding public health and preventing potential health crises, Mr. Gbadegesin stated, “A filthy market is a breeding ground for terrible diseases like cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, ebola, malaria, and others. We cannot stand by and watch some markets expose the people of Lagos State to such conditions, which are clearly avoidable if they do the right things.”
The markets were required to meet various conditions before being allowed to reopen, including the establishment of designated waste disposal points. Mr. Gbadegesin warned that any future violations of these conditions would result in stricter sanctions, potentially leading to the permanent closure of offending markets.
To ensure ongoing compliance, local government authorities will monitor the operations of these reopened markets. The public has been encouraged to report any observed violations to LAWMA. The organization also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for reckless waste dumping within markets, with a commitment to imposing fines and closures on markets found in default.
This reopening marks a significant step in the efforts to maintain a clean and hygienic environment in Lagos while promoting public health and safety.
