Labour Unions Shut FCT Minister’s Gate Amid Ongoing Strike
In a significant escalation of the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) witnessed a major disruption today. The Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), representing the workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), took decisive action by shutting the main gate of the FCT Administration, commonly known as the Minister’s Gate, effectively barring entry and exit.
Amidst the closure, workers were seen congregating around the gate as labour leaders enforced a strict “no entry, no exit” policy. This move comes in the wake of persistent demands for better wages and the recent hike in electricity tariffs, which have yet to see any compromise from the government.
JUAC President Comrade Rifkatu Lortyer emphasized that the shutdown would persist until their demands are addressed. She urged FCTA and FCDA workers to remain at home and adhere to the strike guidelines.
“You know it is a long-time struggle over the minimum wage and the electricity tariff that is just added to it. And till now, the government has not reached a compromise. Since the national bodies of NLC and TUC have declared a strike, we have to enforce it,” Lortyer stated.
Security operatives are currently stationed at the FCTA and FCDA entrances to maintain order.
