Labour Shuts Down National Assembly, Federal Secretariat in Abuja
On Monday, the Parliamentary Staff Union of Nigeria (PASAN) effectively shut down the National Assembly in response to the indefinite strike declared by Organised Labour, demanding a living wage for Nigerian workers. Both entrances to the Assembly complex were blocked, preventing access for workers and visitors alike.
The union also cut off electricity and water supplies to the buildings housing the Senate, the House of Representatives, and other facilities within the complex. Consequently, scheduled activities, such as a revenue monitoring hearing by the House Committee on Finance, were canceled.
At the Federal Secretariat, which accommodates the Ministries of Labour and Employment, Communication, Niger Delta, among others, union leaders were seen patrolling the premises to ensure that no staff were working, enforcing compliance with the strike action.
