Labour Party Unveils Timetable, Nomination Costs for By-Elections
In preparation for the upcoming by-elections to fill vacant positions in the national and state houses of assembly, the Labour Party (LP) has officially released its timetable for primary polls. This move follows the recent removal of some lawmakers due to court decisions, federal appointments, and unfortunate passings.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has slated February 3 as the date for the nationwide by-elections. Umar Farouk, the national secretary of the LP, announced on Thursday that the expression of interest and nomination forms for senatorial, house of representatives, and state houses of assembly positions would be priced at N5 million, N3 million, and N600,000 respectively.
The sale of these forms is set to commence on December 28 and conclude on January 4, 2024, with the screening of aspirants scheduled for January 5. The LP’s primary election is earmarked for January 7.
Furthermore, Farouk emphasized that female aspirants and Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) intending to vie for any of the positions are only required to purchase the expression of interest form.
This announcement provides aspiring politicians within the Labour Party a clear roadmap for participation in the forthcoming by-elections.
