Labour Party Suspends Abure, Farouk Following Financial Misconduct Allegations

The Labour Party (LP) National Caretaker Committee (NCC), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has suspended former National Chairman Julius Abure and the party’s former National Secretary, Farouk Umar, for six months. This decision follows an investigation by the party’s disciplinary committee, which uncovered serious allegations of anti-party activities and financial misconduct by the duo.

The suspension stems from findings by the six-member disciplinary committee, led by Senator Ireti Kingibe, which revealed that Abure and Umar were involved in fraudulent financial transactions. The Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) ratified the recommendations of the committee, which included suspending both leaders and barring Abure from presenting himself as the National Chairman of the party. Farouk Umar has also been suspended for six months, pending further investigation into his role in the financial irregularities. The NEC warned that any failure to comply with the suspension would result in more severe consequences for the individuals involved.

Meanwhile, a group of three LP lawmakers, including the party’s House of Representatives Caucus leader Afam Ogene, Deputy Leader Seyi Sowunmi, and member Amobi Ogah, have dismissed Abure’s actions. They labeled his attempt to suspend party leaders, including Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, as “laughable” and claimed that it reflected Abure’s desperation to hold onto power after his ousting. The lawmakers further emphasized that the Supreme Court ruling, which nullified Abure’s leadership, rendered his authority void.

Governor Otti also condemned Abure’s actions, describing them as a “desperate act” by a “clown looking for a crown.” Otti demanded the arrest of Abure for impersonation and called for full implementation of the Supreme Court judgment, urging the Inspector-General of Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take swift action to preserve the integrity of the ruling.

In response to the claims of a factional leadership within the LP, the INEC has denied any involvement in recognizing Abure’s suspension or any changes to the party’s leadership. A statement issued by the commission clarified that any listings on its website were due to prior court orders and did not reflect any recent changes regarding the LP’s leadership. The INEC emphasized that it had not made any decisions related to the leadership crisis within the party.
