Labour Party Relocates National Convention Venue to Nnewi Amidst Disruption Concerns

In response to fears of potential disruptions, the Labour Party (LP) has decided to relocate its upcoming national convention to Nnewi, Anambra State, as disclosed by sources to Daily Trust.

In a communication addressed to Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the LP’s national chairman, Julius Abure, and secretary, Umar Ibrahim, notified the commission of the change in venue.

According to the letter, the convention, initially slated for the International Conference Center in Umuahia, Abia State, on March 27, has been relocated due to the unavailability of the proposed venue on the scheduled date. The LP urged INEC to monitor the convention at its new location.

A high-ranking LP official revealed to Daily Trust that concerns over potential disruption by a group known as the ‘Obidients’ prompted the decision to move the convention away from Abuja. The same official cited the desire to facilitate the reelection bid of the LP’s national chairman, Abure, as a factor in the decision.

While acknowledging the venue change, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, denied that disruption fears were the primary reason behind the relocation.

This marks the second time the LP has altered the convention venue, initially planned for March 29 in Benin City, Edo State, then shifted to Umuahia, Abia State, before landing on Nnewi, Anambra State.
