Kwara Varsity Deputy Bursar Dies While Watching Super Eagles AFCON Semi-Finals

Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University Malete, passed away on Wednesday night while watching the AFCON semi-finals clash between Nigeria and South Africa.

Nigeria emerged victorious with a 4-2 penalty shootout win after the match ended 1-1 in regulation and extra time. Sources close to Abdullahi revealed that he began feeling uneasy at a sports center in the Sango area, where he watched the thrilling encounter.

Witnesses reported that the late Deputy Bursar watched the entire match, expressing discomfort during the penalty shootout. He complained of dizziness, deciding to return home to rest, unaware that his blood pressure had spiked.

Upon reaching home, Abdullahi collapsed and was swiftly taken to a private hospital in Sango. Unfortunately, he was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to the unknown ailment.

Dr. Saedat Aliyu, the university’s Director of Information, confirmed Abdullahi’s demise, though the cause of death remains uncertain. Aliyu expressed condolences, stating, “He was hale and hearty on Wednesday at his office. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Firdaus.”

The university issued an official statement announcing Abdullahi’s death, scheduling the Janazah and burial at the Hausa Muslim cemetery in Ilorin.

In a somber parallel, former Delta State federal lawmaker Dr. Cairo Ojougboh also passed away during the Super Eagles’ match. Ojougboh reportedly suffered a massive heart attack when South Africa scored, succumbing to the shock of the game.

Tragically, the AFCON semi-finals also claimed the life of a National Youth Service Corps member, identified as Samuel from Kaduna State, who reportedly died just before the final kick securing Nigeria’s victory.

The football fervor that gripped the nation took a dark turn as these individuals lost their lives while passionately supporting the Super Eagles.
