Kenyan Police Arrest Fleeing Binance Executive
The Kenyan Police Service has arrested Nadeem Anjarwalla, a top executive from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, following his escape from Nigeria. According to sources familiar with the case, Interpol is expected to extradite Anjarwalla to Nigeria within the week.
Reliable government sources, who spoke under condition of anonymity, confirmed Anjarwalla’s arrest on Sunday night. One source stated, “Anjarwalla has been arrested by the Kenyan Police Service and will be extradited to Nigeria by Interpol this week.”
The arrest comes after the Federal Government of Nigeria had traced Anjarwalla to Kenya following his escape from lawful custody. The PUNCH had earlier reported that Anjarwalla went into hiding upon landing in Kenya. Subsequent to his arrest, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Interpol, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenyan Police Service have intensified discussions to expedite his extradition.
Sources close to the investigation have reiterated that the extradition process is in motion. An EFCC spokesperson explained that “all hands are on deck” as they work with Kenyan authorities and Interpol to return Anjarwalla to Nigeria, where he will face charges.
In a related development, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, indicated in a recent bulletin titled “EFCC Alert” that the commission is working with various international agencies, including the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and the Kenyan authorities to bring Anjarwalla back to Nigeria. Olukoyede stated that the case against Binance chiefs involves allegations of tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering totaling $35,400,000.
With Anjarwalla’s arrest, the next steps involve finalizing his extradition to face trial in Nigeria. Further developments are expected as Kenyan and Nigerian authorities, in partnership with Interpol, proceed with the extradition process.
