Kebbi State Residents Raid Government, Private Warehouses

Some residents of Kebbi State launched an assault on a government warehouse situated in the Bayan Kara area of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, on Saturday night. The marauders made off with a considerable amount of food supplies, defying the presence of security personnel stationed at the facility. Additionally, they brazenly broke into private warehouses and shops within the vicinity, pillaging food items and causing mayhem.

The audacious raid also targeted a derelict truck loaded with assorted grains intended for distribution in Birnin Kebbi. This incident echoes similar attacks on warehouses in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Suleja, Niger State, underscoring a troubling trend of unrest.

The Chairman of the Bayan Kara Market’s food vendors association, Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, recounted the chaos, indicating that the perpetrators even set fire to shops and warehouses belonging to traders. Despite attempts by security forces to disperse the assailants with gunshots and tear gas, they persisted in their looting spree.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, expressed dismay, labeling the event as “unfortunate.” He disclosed that the looted food items were part of the state government’s provisions earmarked for distribution among the populace, emphasizing that such brazen acts had never occurred in Kebbi before.

According to Idris, the stolen goods amounted to a significant investment by the government, with over N5 billion worth of assorted grains dispatched in more than 200 trucks for distribution. He lamented that the perpetrators had callously deprived the people of their rightful provisions.

Assuring preventive measures, Idris affirmed that the government had bolstered security around its warehouses to avert future occurrences. However, efforts to obtain a response from the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nafiu Abubakar, proved futile as calls went unanswered.

The incident comes amidst a backdrop of rising living costs attributed to factors such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the fluctuation of the national currency. As authorities grapple with the aftermath of the looting spree, the event serves as a stark reminder of the socio-economic challenges confronting the region.

In light of these developments, the necessity for sustainable solutions to address the root causes of discontent and hardship becomes increasingly imperative.
