Kano Transport Commissioner Bails Out Alleged Drug Lord Suleiman Danwawu
The Commissioner for Transport in Kano State, Ibrahim Namadi, has stood as surety for Suleiman Danwawu, a suspected notorious drug dealer facing trial at the Federal High Court in Kano. Danwawu, who is being prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was granted bail by Justice M.S. Shu’aibu on July 16 under strict conditions, including the production of a serving commissioner as surety and the deposit of N5 million.
In a development that has sparked public interest, Commissioner Namadi stepped forward to fulfill the court’s requirements, submitting an affidavit of means and a formal letter of undertaking. The letter, dated July 18 and addressed to the deputy chief registrar of the court, expressed Namadi’s willingness to guarantee Danwawu’s appearance in court throughout the trial.
“I humbly wish to apply to stand as surety for the Defendant in the above suit (SULAIMAN AMINU)… I undertake to abide by the bail conditions imposed on the Defendant and promise to produce him before the Court on all adjourned dates until the final determination of the case,” the commissioner wrote.
Danwawu is facing an eight-count charge related to drug trafficking, filed by the NDLEA on May 21. Following his arraignment on May 28, the court scheduled a bail hearing for June 16 and remanded the defendant in prison custody pending the outcome.
Efforts to obtain a comment from Commissioner Namadi were unsuccessful, as he stated he was in a meeting and has not responded since. Meanwhile, the Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has declared its intention to closely monitor the trial, citing its significance and public interest.
