Kano Court Acquits Man Accused of Giving False Information in Housewife’s Stabbing Case

Kano State High Court has acquitted Nasidi Muhammad, who faced charges of providing false information with the intent to shield Hafsat Suraj, 24, from legal consequences. Suraj is accused of stabbing her domestic worker, Nafiu Hafizu, 38, resulting in his death.

Nasidi, along with Suraj’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, and Adamu Muhammad, were charged with giving false information with the intention of protecting Suraj from legal punishment, a violation of Section 167 of the Penal Code.

All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. In his ruling, Justice Farouk Lawan acquitted Nasidi, citing Section 124(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), which grants the Attorney-General of Kano State the authority to withdraw charges or discontinue any case at any time.

The court ordered the remand of the other defendants in a correctional center and adjourned the case until May 6 for re-arraignment.

Prosecution counsel Halima Yahuza filed a motion on March 26 requesting an amendment of the charges and urging the court to strike out the fourth defendant. Yahuza alleged that Suraj stabbed Nafiu on his chest and other parts of his body on December 21, 2023, at Unguwa Uku Quarters in Kano, resulting in his death.

The alleged offense violates Section 221 of the Penal Code.
