Kano Assembly Abolishes Four Emirates, Plans for Second-Class Emirs
The Kano State House of Assembly has approved an amendment to the Kano State Emirate Council Law, effectively dissolving the state’s five emirates.
The decision followed intense deliberations during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Hon. Ismail Falgore. The bill, which underwent second and third readings, was passed into law with the aim of restoring the traditional structure of the Kano Emirate.
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu argued that the dissolution would revive Kano’s former prestige, suggesting that the division into five emirates had diminished the state’s national standing. Majority Leader Lawan Dala echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the emirate council, as a custodian of culture, had been compromised by the creation of additional emirates. He called for a return to Kano’s historical roots of “one emirate, one people, and one state.”
The new law also includes provisions for the establishment of second-class emirs, although further details on their roles and responsibilities are yet to be disclosed.
