Justin Trudeau Reportedly Set to Resign as Canadian Prime Minister

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation as early as Monday, according to a report from The Globe and Mail. Citing three sources, the report suggests Trudeau’s decision may precede a key national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday, though the exact timing of his announcement remains uncertain.

This development comes amid a turbulent period for Trudeau, whose popularity has waned significantly. Canada is grappling with a range of pressing issues, including a housing crisis, high inflation, and declining per-capita GDP. Recent polling by Angus Reid placed Trudeau’s disapproval rating at a staggering 68%, with only 28% of Canadians expressing support for him.

Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and became prime minister in 2015, has faced mounting political challenges in recent months. In September, he narrowly survived a no-confidence vote initiated by the opposition Conservative Party. The situation worsened in December when Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from his cabinet, citing irreconcilable differences over the country’s fiscal strategy. Her departure was seen as a significant blow to Trudeau’s leadership, as Freeland had been a close ally.

Adding to his challenges, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh announced plans to introduce a formal motion of no-confidence later this month. Singh argued that Trudeau’s government had lost its mandate, stating, “No matter who is leading the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up.”

Trudeau’s personal conduct has also drawn criticism. In November, he faced backlash for attending a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto while a riot unfolded in Montreal. Critics, including Conservative MP Don Stewart, accused the prime minister of being out of touch with the country’s pressing issues.

Trudeau’s reported resignation would mark the end of a decade-long leadership of the Liberal Party and a transformative, though polarizing, era in Canadian politics. If confirmed, it will leave the party searching for a new leader to guide it through the upcoming national election scheduled for October.
