JUST IN: Zamfara HoA Speaker Impeached

18 out of 24 members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have voted to impeach the Speaker, Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki. The decision was reached unanimously during an emergency meeting held on Thursday night.

Following the impeachment, Hon. Bashar Gummi has been ratified as the pro-tempore Speaker to assume the crucial role. The move is seen as a response to the escalating insecurity in the state, fueled by persistent attacks from bandits on communities.

The motion to impeach the Speaker was reportedly initiated by Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru Constituency. Lawmakers cited the resurgence of insecurity as the primary catalyst for the unprecedented decision, emphasizing the urgent need for a robust response to the bandits’ attacks.

Notably, the impeached Speaker, Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, had been absent from the state for several days before facing removal from office. Speaking on behalf of the lawmakers, Hon. Shamsudeen Basko, representing Talata Mafara, highlighted the critical importance of addressing the security crisis.

“I have two issues, but an observation was made on one, which is that of insecurity, which has been disturbing Zamfara residents, some are being killed and abducted,” stated Hon. Shamsudeen Basko. He further stressed the necessity of swift action to protect the people from the unchallenged invasion of armed bandits into local government headquarters.

Meanwhile, Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, is reported to be currently out of the state, raising questions about the administrative response to the unfolding crisis. The newly appointed pro-tempore Speaker, Hon. Bashar Gummi, has been tasked with prioritizing the issue of insecurity to safeguard the well-being of Zamfara residents.
