JUST IN: Tribunal Fines Multichoice N150m, Orders Free One-Month DStv, GOtv Subscriptions

In a landmark ruling on Friday, June 7, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja fined MultiChoice Nigeria Limited N150 million for disregarding its jurisdiction and flouting its orders. The decision was given by a three-man panel led by Thomas Okusu.

The tribunal had previously intervened to prevent MultiChoice from increasing subscription fees without proper notice, following a lawsuit filed by Barrister Festus Onifade. Onifade argued that the eight-day notice given by MultiChoice for the price hike was insufficient and sought interim orders against the pay-TV provider.

Additionally, the tribunal unanimously mandated that MultiChoice provide Nigerians with a one-month free subscription to its DSTV and GOTV services.

The tribunal has scheduled July 3 to hear the substantive case against MultiChoice.
