JUST IN: Tinubu Government Approves Reduction in Electricity Tariffs for Band A Consumers
The Tinubu-led administration has given the green light for a downward revision of electricity tariffs for Band A consumers.
Band A consumers, characterized by those enjoying a minimum of 20 hours of daily electricity supply, will now benefit from reduced tariffs.
Previously charged at N225/Kwh, Band A consumers will now pay N206.80/Kwh following the approved tariff review.
The announcement of this tariff adjustment came through a notice issued by Ikeja Electric on Monday morning.
The notice specified, “Please be informed of the downward tariff review of our Band A feeders from N225/kwh to N206.80/kwh effective 6th May 2024 with guaranteed availability of 20-24hrs supply daily. The tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged.”
This move follows recent public outcry and criticism sparked by the administration’s decision to increase tariffs for Band A consumers just last month.
Civil society organizations and concerned citizens condemned the initial tariff hike, labeling it as insensitive to the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), was among those who criticized the government’s action, particularly questioning the rationale behind raising tariffs without delivering consistent power supply.
Falana emphasized the illegality of such tariff increments and called out the government and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for failing to justify the hike, asserting that they had let down the Nigerian populace.
