JUST IN: Senegal’s AFCON Journey Ends in Defeat Against Ivory Coast
In a thrilling clash at the Africa Cup of Nations, defending champions Senegal were knocked out by hosts Ivory Coast after a tense penalty shootout. Franck Kessie’s decisive spot-kick secured a quarter-final spot for The Elephants.
Ivory Coast dominated possession in the first half, but Senegal took an early lead with a superb strike from Habib Diallo in the fourth minute. Sadio Mane’s precise cross set up Diallo’s controlled chest finish. However, former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s heroics were overshadowed when he conceded a penalty in the 77th minute, allowing Kessie to level the score.
The deadlock persisted through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. The Elephants emerged victorious, securing a 5-4 win and a quarter-final berth.
Despite managerial upheaval and a shock defeat in the group stage, Ivory Coast displayed resilience, eliminating the defending champions and tournament favorites.
Senegal’s captain, Sadio Mane, played a pivotal role in his team’s early lead but missed a crucial chance in the 77th minute. Mane’s failure to convert could have secured Senegal’s victory.
Ivory Coast advances to the quarter-finals, facing the winner of the Mali vs. Burkina Faso match on February 3 at Stade de la Paix in Bouake.
