JUST IN: Senate Postpones Plenary Resumption to October 7, Extends Recess
The Senate has postponed its planned resumption of plenary sittings, shifting the date from September 23 to October 7, 2025. The change was communicated in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and circulated within the National Assembly.
The adjustment extends the chamber’s annual recess by another two weeks, sparking concern among observers who note that legislative work on key issues will remain suspended. No official explanation was given for the shift, but sources within the Assembly suggested that lawmakers opted to delay resumption so they could fully observe the Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
In the memo titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” Akubueze apologised to senators for the late notification, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused. The Senate had originally adjourned plenary on July 24, with Akpabio at the time describing the recess as an act of reciprocity with the House of Representatives, which also took its annual break in line with the legislative calendar.
