JUST IN: Senate Enters Closed-Door Session Over Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The Nigerian Senate has entered a closed-door session to deliberate on President Bola Tinubu’s request for the ratification of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This move follows the President’s suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly.

The development was triggered during Thursday’s plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from President Tinubu, formally notifying the Senate of the emergency declaration. Following the reading of the letter, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele cited Order 135 of the Senate Rules and moved a motion for an executive session. The motion was seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

As of press time, the Senate remains in the closed-door session.
