JUST IN: Reps Pass Bill to Return Nigeria to Old National Anthem

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a bill advocating for Nigeria to revert to its original National Anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” replacing the current anthem, “Arise O’ Compatriots.”

The bill, championed by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, swiftly moved through all legislative stages, from initial reading to final approval. Titled “Bill For An Act to Provide for the National Anthem of Nigeria, and for Matters Related Thereto,” the proposed law outlines that upon enactment, the old anthem will be reinstated as the official national symbol.

The legislation mandates that the anthem be sung at significant state and national ceremonies, including Federal Executive Council meetings, legislative sessions, swearing-in ceremonies, major celebrations, diplomatic events, and other occasions as determined by the Minister of Education with presidential consent. It also specifies protocols for the performance of the anthem, emphasizing respect and decorum during its rendition.

In presenting the bill, Hon. Ihonvbere argued that the old anthem encapsulates a sense of national commitment and dedication necessary for Nigeria’s progress. He emphasized that revisiting the old anthem could inspire a renewed sense of unity and duty among Nigerians.

However, the bill faced opposition from some members. Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda questioned the necessity of the bill, arguing that it fails to address the nation’s pressing issues. He called for a focus on more critical legislative matters that could bring substantive change to Nigeria.

Echoing Chinda’s sentiments, Hon. Ahmed Satomi urged the House to prioritize legislation that directly impacts the welfare of Nigerians, suggesting that the bill does not address urgent challenges such as hunger and insecurity.

Despite the opposition, the bill passed, signaling a potential shift in one of Nigeria’s most symbolic representations.
