JUST IN: Plane Crashes in Kenya, Dozens Feared Dead
A small passenger plane has crashed in Kenya, with at least a dozen people feared dead, according to authorities.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that the aircraft went down early Tuesday while flying from the coastal town of Diani to Kichwa Tembo airstrip in the Maasai Mara National Park. The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time (0230 GMT).
“The aircraft had 12 persons on board,” the KCAA said in a statement. Officials have not yet released information about the nationalities of those on board or the possible cause of the crash.
Rescue and emergency response teams have been dispatched to the scene, and government agencies are working together to investigate the incident.
In recent months, Kenya has recorded several aviation accidents involving small aircraft. In August, a light aircraft operated by the medical charity Amref crashed on the outskirts of Nairobi, killing six people and injuring two others.
Authorities are urging patience as investigations continue to determine the cause of Tuesday’s tragedy.
