JUST IN: Organisers Reject IGP’s Proposal for Restricted Hunger Protests
The organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled to take place nationwide on August 1, have rejected the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s suggestion to limit demonstrations to designated areas. Egbetokun proposed confining protests to specific locations, advising against street rallies to prevent potential violence.
In a meeting with the organisers, Egbetokun stated, “It is not advisable to go on street processions because, while you are planning peaceful protests, others may be planning violence.”
Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a lawyer for the Take It Back Movement—one of the groups behind the protest—dismissed the IGP’s proposal. Despite appeals from both federal and state governments, the organisers remain steadfast in their plan to stage protests from August 1 to 10, as many Nigerians seek to voice their grievances over current hardships in the country.
