JUST IN: Oldest Missionary in Nigeria, Ruth Elton, Dies at 91

Renowned British-born Nigerian missionary, Ruth Elton, has died at the age of 91. She passed away on Saturday at the Sharon compound in Alafia Bamin Quarters, Ilesa, Osun State.

Born on September 7, 1933, Elton dedicated her life to Christian ministry, healing, and revival work across Nigeria, particularly in the western and central regions. She was the only daughter of the late Sydney Granville Elton, fondly remembered as Pa Elton, one of the pioneering figures of Pentecostalism in Nigeria.

Having moved to Nigeria with her parents in 1937, Ruth Elton immersed herself fully in missionary service. She worked extensively in Egbe, Okene, Koton Karfe, and several communities across Kogi, Ondo, Oyo, and Osun States. In the 1970s, she renounced her British citizenship and naturalised as a Nigerian, becoming fluent in both Ebira and Yoruba.

Despite her advanced age, Elton continued to hold firm to her father’s prophetic belief that Nigeria would one day move beyond its reputation for corruption to be recognised globally for righteousness and prosperity.

Her impact extended beyond evangelism. In Okene, Kogi State, she became deeply involved in community health initiatives, particularly in reducing infant mortality. She openly spoke about preventable causes of child deaths, such as poor hygiene and harmful practices like force-feeding infants, advocating for better care and awareness.

Ruth Elton never married, believing her life’s mission was to serve God and humanity through her work. She often expressed fulfillment in the legacy she left behind in both spiritual and humanitarian contributions.

Her remains have been deposited at the mortuary, and burial arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
