JUST IN: Ohanaeze President General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu is Dead
Elder statesman and President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has died. The esteemed leader passed away Thursday in an undisclosed hospital in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. He was set to turn 82 on September 4 this year.
Last year, as Iwuanyanwu celebrated his 81st birthday, his New Owerri residence became a hub of activity despite his wish for a subdued celebration in light of the country’s somber mood. Dignitaries from various backgrounds gathered to honor the influential Igbo leader, known by his chieftaincy title Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.
Iwuanyanwu ascended to the position of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on April 20, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Prof. George Obiozor. His passing has been described as a significant loss to the Igbo community and Nigeria at large.
A national officer of Ohanaeze, who requested anonymity, confirmed the death. Another prominent Igbo leader expressed devastation at the news, noting the critical timing of his death when his leadership was profoundly needed.
More details will follow as they become available.
