JUST IN: NLC Confirms Arrest of President Joe Ajaero by SSS Operatives
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the arrest of its president, Joe Ajaero, by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS). Ajaero was reportedly taken into custody on Monday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as he prepared to travel to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.
Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information, disclosed the arrest during an interview with Channels Television. He noted that Ajaero was en route to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) conference in London, which commenced today.
While the NLC has yet to confirm Ajaero’s current location, Upah mentioned that the union leader managed to send a brief message stating that it was the secret police who had detained him.
This development follows accusations by Nigerian police earlier this year, alleging that Ajaero had links to terrorism financing. The NLC president had previously responded to the police summons, accompanied by his legal team and fellow union members.
In response to Ajaero’s arrest, the NLC has threatened to launch an indefinite strike should he remain in custody. The union remains on high alert as the situation unfolds.
