JUST IN: Nigeria Edges Tanzania 2-1 in AFCON 2025 Group C Opener
Nigeria opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a narrow 2-1 victory over Tanzania at Fez Stadium, claiming three points in Group C.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the first half through Semi Ajayi’s header, but Tanzania responded early in the second half when M’Mombwa equalized. Nigeria regained control just two minutes later as Ademola Lookman scored a decisive strike to restore the lead.
Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi were influential in attack, while Tanzania’s goalkeeper Masudi made several key saves to keep the match competitive. Despite late pressure from the Taifa Stars, Nigeria held on to secure the win.
The result marks a positive start for Nigeria following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding pressure on the team to perform at AFCON. Tanzania, meanwhile, are navigating a period of transition after replacing coach Hemed Suleiman with interim manager Miguel Gamondi just a month before the tournament.
Nigeria now tops Group C with three points, while Tanzania will look to regroup in their next fixture. Egypt also began the tournament strongly, defeating Zimbabwe 2-1 on Monday.
