JUST IN: Nationwide Blackout as Power Grid Collapses for Fourth Time in 2024
Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed once again, marking the fourth occurrence this year. According to Daily Trust, the country’s current electricity generation has plummeted to a mere 0.80 megawatts.
Data from the Independent System Operator, an autonomous branch of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), shows a significant drop in power plant contributions to the grid. Around 2 p.m., generation was at 2,797.16 MW, down from an average of 3,417.99 MW at 1 p.m. By 3 p.m., this had further declined to 1,020.08 MW, and by 4 p.m., it had dramatically fallen to just 0.80 MW. The minimal power being generated is solely attributed to the Trans-Amadi Power Plant.
This latest incident adds to the ongoing concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity supply, which has experienced frequent grid collapses this year. The Senate is currently probing the $5.792 billion Mambila hydroelectric power project in light of these persistent issues.
