JUST IN: National Grid Collapses for the Third Time in a Week, Plunging Nation into Darkness
Nigerians have once again been plunged into darkness following a collapse of the national power grid, marking the third such incident within a single week. This latest grid failure, which occurred early on Saturday morning, has left many states across the country in a total blackout, sparking widespread frustration and deepening concerns over the nation’s unstable electricity supply.
According to data from the Nigerian System Operator (niggrid.org), the grid recorded an alarming zero Megawatts (MW) at 8:16 AM today, indicating a complete power outage. All 22 generation companies (GenCos) were reported to be down as of the time of this report.
This marks the eighth grid disturbance in 2024, underscoring the persistent issues that continue to plague Nigeria’s power sector. Businesses, households, and critical infrastructure have been severely impacted by the unreliable electricity supply, leading to growing concerns over the economic and social implications of the repeated failures.
Despite the widespread effects, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to issue an official statement on the cause or potential resolution of the latest collapse. The silence from the TCN has left the public and key stakeholders without clear information, fueling further frustration.
Earlier in the year, Nigeria experienced its first blackout of 2024 on February 4, when the grid collapsed at 11:51 AM, causing power generation to plummet from 2,407MW to just 31MW by noon. By 1 PM, the grid had completely shut down.
