JUST IN: Lassa Fever Outbreak Hits NYSC Camp in Adamawa State
The Adamawa State Ministry of Health and Human Services has officially announced the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the Damare National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp. The confirmation came after a corps member tested positive for the highly infectious disease.
Pharmacist Zirra Mathias Bubanani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, disclosed that the corps member’s positive status was determined through an investigation conducted on a sample at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja. The sample was taken when the individual exhibited symptoms resembling those of Lassa Fever.
As health authorities initiate contact tracing and isolation measures, Pharmacist Bubanani urged the public to prioritize hygiene and sanitation practices. Additionally, he stressed the importance of proper food storage to prevent rat infestations, a common vector for Lassa Fever.
The Permanent Secretary called on the public to report any individuals suspected of having symptoms similar to those of Lassa Fever to local health officers. Despite the gravity of the situation, he reassured the public, stating that the ministry, with the unwavering support of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, is collaborating with state health facilities, agencies, and partners to contain the spread of the disease.
