JUST IN: Lagos Police Refund N1m Extorted from NYSC Members
The Lagos State Police Command has returned N1 million that was extorted from three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by four police officers in the Surulere area of Lagos.
According to social media reports, the incident came to light after Oluyemi Fasipe, an X (formerly Twitter) user, revealed that the officers extorted the money from the corps members for not carrying a physical copy of a driver’s licence. Additionally, one of the victims was allegedly forced to transfer Bitcoin worth $842.
Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and were under interrogation. While their names were not disclosed, Hundeyin assured the public that a police trial would determine their culpability, which could result in their dismissal.
In an update posted on Friday, October 4, Fasipe announced via X that the extorted funds had been returned to the corps members. He praised the efforts of the police and the NYSC Lagos State office for their swift intervention, stating, “The rogue officers from Area C Command who extorted over N1 million from the corps members have refunded the money.”
Fasipe also expressed hope for justice as the trial of the officers continues, while extending gratitude to the parties involved in resolving the issue.
