JUST IN: Kano Assembly Approves Creation of Second-Class Emirates

The Kano House of Assembly has passed a bill to establish second-class emirates within the state. The bill, which was introduced on Monday, swiftly progressed through its second and third readings on Tuesday.

The newly approved legislation aims to create three distinct emirates: Rano (encompassing Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya), Karaye (covering Karaye and Rogo), and Gaya (including Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu). These second-class emirates will operate under the authority of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano.

This development follows a recent ruling by a Kano state high court, which issued a permanent injunction preventing Aminu Bayero from presenting himself as the Emir of Kano until the resolution of an ongoing legal suit. This action followed the repeal of a law enacted by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, which had previously led to Sanusi’s deposition and exile in 2020.
