JUST IN: Hours after vowing civilian safety, NAF airstrikes reportedly kill many in Borno

Military airstrikes in Borno State have reportedly killed an unspecified number of civilians, despite assurances from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that civilians would be protected during ongoing operations.

According to a security source quoted by Premium Times, the airstrikes targeted positions in the Mararaba area of Kukawa Local Government Area between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.

“The number of civilians killed is uncertain,” the source said. “But a high number of civilians have been killed, and vehicles destroyed.” He confirmed that at least three people were dead and 10 vehicles destroyed. Some casualties were reportedly taken to the General Hospital in Mungono for treatment.

The victims were primarily fishermen and commercial drivers gathered at a T-junction connecting the road to Daban Masara in Kukawa and Badeiri in Marte LGA. Drivers were in the area to transport fish and other goods.

A NAF pilot also confirmed the incident to Premium Times, noting that it was discussed during “today’s briefing” in a state in the North-west.

The Air Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the civilian casualties. SK Blog will provide updates as more information becomes available.
