JUST IN: Healthcare Services to Resume as Nurses Officially Call Off Strike
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide warning strike after receiving firm commitments from the federal government to address its key demands. The decision followed an emergency virtual meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Saturday.
NANNM said the strike was called off after a thorough review of the outcomes from a negotiation meeting held on Friday, August 1, with top government officials, including the Ministers of Health and Labour and Employment. The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) detailing timelines for implementing nine core demands presented by the union.
According to the NEC, the suspension of the strike reflects the union’s willingness to engage in dialogue and its trust in the government’s pledge to deliver on the agreed terms. In a circular issued after the meeting, the NEC acknowledged the government’s progress and commitment to a time-bound implementation of the union’s demands.
The circular, signed by NANNM President Comrade Haruna Mamman and General Secretary Dr. A. Shettima, instructed all state councils to mobilize members for immediate resumption of duties across the country. The national leadership will continue to monitor the government’s adherence to the MoU.
The NEC also warned against any form of victimization of nurses who participated in the strike, including permanent, intern, or locum staff, emphasizing that all actions taken during the strike were within the legal rights of organized labour.
NANNM expressed gratitude to its members for their solidarity, discipline, and commitment throughout the seven-day warning strike, which began on July 29, 2025. The strike had caused widespread disruption of healthcare services in public hospitals nationwide.
