JUST IN: Former Governor of Abia State and Ex-Minister Ogbonnaya Onu Passes Away at 71
Former Governor of Abia State, Ogbonnaya Onu, has tragically passed away at the age of 71. Family sources have informed newsmen that Onu breathed his last at a hospital in Abuja this morning.
Onu, known for his roles as a scientist, teacher, and politician, was trained in the United States. Before venturing into national politics during the transition to civilian rule under former President Ibrahim Babangida from 1991 to 1993, Onu served as a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt.
Elected as governor in 1992, Onu’s tenure was cut short by the overthrow of Ernest Shonekan’s administration by the late Sani Abacha in 1994. Despite these challenges, Onu remained committed to politics and even made several attempts to run for the presidency.
In a bid to further pursue his political aspirations, Onu resigned from his position as Minister of Science and Technology in the Buhari administration to contest the presidential primaries in 2022.
The passing of Ogbonnaya Onu marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics.
