JUST IN: “Flying Russian Flag in Nigeria is Treasonable” – Defence Chief
In a stern address following an emergency security session at Aso Rock, General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, announced that individuals flying the Russian flag within Nigeria have committed a treasonable offense. The session was convened with President Bola Tinubu amidst escalating unrest.
General Musa emphasized that the military would uphold the nation’s democracy and warned against any actions that could disrupt the government. He stated, “We are warning in clear terms, and the President has also said we should convey this, that we will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense, and it will be viewed and treated as such.”
Addressing the recent riots, General Musa noted that what began as a peaceful protest had devolved into chaos, with criminals exploiting the situation. He condemned the actions of those inciting unrest and vowed that the authorities would take stringent measures against the perpetrators.
“We’ve identified those pushing individuals to carry Russian flags and will take serious action. The President has instructed us not to tolerate any disruptions to Nigeria’s peace and tranquility,” he asserted.
Reiterating the military’s commitment to democracy, General Musa declared that regime change through non-democratic means would not be permitted. “Nigeria is a sovereign, democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure it continues to thrive. We will not accept anyone pushing for a change of government,” he said.
The General concluded by assuring Nigerians of the military’s readiness to intervene if the situation escalates further, underscoring that flying foreign flags in Nigeria is a severe violation of national sovereignty.
