JUST IN: FG To Complete Airlift Of Nigerians Fleeing Conflict-Hit Sudan In 48hrs
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM says the country will in the next 48 hours complete thy airlift of all its citizens who have registered to return home after their evacuation from conflict areas of Sudan.
Spokesperson of the Commission, Abdur-Rahman Adekunle Balogun says the Plan to complete the airlift by Tuesday follows an agreement with Sudanese private airline, Taco Aviation to deploy 500-seater capacity aircraft alongside 250-capacity air peace plane.
Both large-capacity aircraft are to undertake back-to-back airlift operations to clear all backlog of Nigerians in Port Sudan through the South Sudanese capital, juba in the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affair, Disaster Management, and Social Development says no stranded Nigerian is left at the Aswan Airport in Egypt as all those who registered after their evacuation from conflict-hit Sudan to Egypt’s Arqeel land border and Wadi Halfa coastal have been brought back home.
Sunday’s airlift operation from Aswan Airport in Egypt involved two indigenous airlines including Azman with 410 evacuees and Max Air with 324 others bringing a total to 734 passengers.
The airlift of 102 returnees from Port Sudan by Taco Aviation brings the total figure of stranded Nigerians airlifted on Sunday to 834 being the single highest number since the operation started on Wednesday, May 3
Another batch of evacuees are being expected later on board Air Peace passenger plane with 1,471 stranded Nigerians mostly children, women and students so far airlifted back home safely and dignifiedly with no life lost in the operation.
