JUST IN: FG Sets 16 as Minimum Admission Age for Tertiary Institutions, Issues Strong Warning to Heads of Schools
The Federal Government has officially set the minimum age for admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions at 16 years. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the opening of the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the decision reflects a commitment to aligning academic entry requirements with cognitive maturity and readiness. He described the age benchmark as “non-negotiable,” underscoring the government’s intent to standardize the admission process nationwide.
The minister also issued a stern warning to heads of institutions, noting that any involvement in admission fraud would lead to prosecution. He reiterated that the age requirement is compulsory and that violators will face strict legal consequences.
