JUST IN: FG, ASUU Begin Crucial Talks to Avert Nationwide University Strike

A high-stakes meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced in Abuja, aiming to prevent a looming nationwide strike.

The discussions, currently taking place at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education, follow a recent ultimatum from ASUU threatening industrial action over what they describe as the government’s failure to honor previous agreements.

As tensions rise, this meeting is seen as a critical last-ditch effort to avoid the disruption of academic activities in Nigeria’s public universities. The talks come on the heels of a warning from ASUU, indicating they would halt academic operations across universities if their demands are not addressed.

Last Friday, during a briefing to mark his one year in office, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, confirmed the government’s intent to engage with ASUU representatives. The meeting, originally set for Monday, was postponed without explanation, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.

Leading the ASUU delegation is the union’s president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, accompanied by former presidents of the union, including immediate past president Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi. The Federal Government’s team includes the Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman, along with senior officials from the ministry.

The primary focus of the talks is on resolving outstanding issues to avert a strike that could severely impact Nigeria’s public universities.
