JUST IN: ECOWAS Declares State of Emergency in West Africa
The Economic Community of West African States has declared a state of emergency across the region as political and security tensions escalate.
ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray announced the decision on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at ministerial level in Abuja. The meeting was called in response to a wave of coups and attempted mutinies that have unsettled several member states.
Touray said the developments require a clear assessment of the region’s democratic trajectory and stronger investment in collective security.
