JUST IN: ECOWAS Court Finds Nigerian Government Guilty of Rights Violations During #EndSARS Protest, Fines FG

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice has found the Federal Government of Nigeria guilty of human rights violations during the #EndSARS protest of October 2020.

The court declared on Wednesday that the Nigerian government’s actions, especially the excessive use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, violated multiple international human rights standards. These violations include breaches of articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

As part of the ruling, the court has ordered the Nigerian government to pay N10 million in compensation to each of the victims identified in the suit.
